On October 7, within the framework of the strategic alliance between COCATRAM and DIRECTEMAR, REMPORT, Red MAMLa Chile, Fundación Mascarona, and WISTA Chile held a virtual meeting to exchange best practices and experiences. The goal was to promote mutual cooperation initiatives in the area of gender equality and women’s participation in the maritime industry.
The meeting is the product of the collaborative work plan that COCATRAM and DIRECTEMAR have been developing for years in the area of technical cooperation. This plan is in line with the objectives and programs of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), one of which is the Women in Maritime Program.
During the session, Laura Rivera, President of REMPORT, spoke about the origins of the organization, its vision, mission, and the lines of work associated with its efforts in terms of links with the industry, both in the private and public sectors.

“After the meeting with REMPORT, Red MAMLa Chile, and WISTA Chile, I can confirm that these gatherings are valuable because they bring together women who promote maritime and port development in the region. Sharing experiences, best practices, and challenges reminds us that cooperation knows no borders, and that together, we can work toward a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable sector. Today, we reaffirm that female leadership at sea opens up new routes and inspires new generations to continue sailing the waters of opportunity”
— Laura Rivera, President of REMPORT
Likewise, T1° LT Carolina Pacheco Erices, Permanent Representative of Red MAMLa in Chile, presented the main initiatives promoted in the areas of technical training, women’s inclusion, and activities coordinated with the private sector.
“This introductory meeting has been an important opportunity to learn more about REMPORT and its work on gender and inclusion in Central America. We are convinced that it will be a great ally in promoting the growth of women’s participation in the maritime sector.” — T1° LT Carolina Pacheco Erices, Permanent Representative of Red MAMLa in Chile

Next, Raquel Meza, President of the Mascarona Foundation and current President of WISTA Chile, shared the guidelines for actions aimed at promoting strategic alliances to ensure the well-being of seafarers and encourage the incorporation of women into the maritime-port sector. She also emphasized the progress made in implementing ILO Convention 190, a document that addresses violence and harassment in the world of work, including gender-based violence and harassment.

“Sessions like this one, where we share REMPORT’s experience in Central America, are important for WISTA Chile and the entire Latin American region. Events with female participation are essential because women have contributed significantly to the maritime sector’s growth in recent years. COCATRAM’s international cooperation in this field is a valuable platform for raising awareness of women’s work in the industry and strengthening their participation at regional and global levels” — Raquel Meza, President of the Mascarona Foundation and current President of WISTA Chile
At the end of the meeting, participants expressed gratitude for the opportunities to converse and exchange ideas. They also expressed their strong interest in creating plans for joint activities to empower women in the maritime and port sector and promote a more sustainable industry.
