As part of World Oceans Day, Arsenio Domínguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), shared a video message highlighting the importance of reimagining our relationship with the ocean and reinforcing efforts to conserve it.

Speaking from the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, Domínguez emphasized the deep connection between communities and the sea, noting that the ocean is not only a way of life but also an essential source of livelihood for millions of people.

He also reaffirmed the IMO’s commitment to protecting the marine environment by strengthening regulatory frameworks aimed at reducing plastic pollution and other contaminants, while addressing emerging challenges such as underwater noise and the management of transboundary species.

In his message, the Secretary-General called on the international community to find a balance between the benefits we derive from the ocean and our responsibility to preserve it, underscoring the need to protect this shared heritage for future generations.
