The Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, presented his New Year’s message, outlining three key priorities for 2025: protection of Seafarers, Security around the golbe and Decarbonization of the maritime sector.

In his statement, he emphasized the importance of improving the working conditions and protection of maritime workers, while advocating for reducing the criminalization of their work and promoting greater diversity, especially in gender issues. In this way, he reaffirmed his personal commitment to equality, noting that he will continue to demand female representation in any discussion space.

He also highlighted the goal of achieving full decarbonization of the maritime sector by 2050, according to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy adopted in 2023. He emphasized the need for Member States and stakeholders to work together to implement technical and economic measures to ensure this goal, in addition to driving ocean sustainability under the theme of World Maritime Day 2025: “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

With a call for unity, he invited the global maritime community to collaborate in building a successful year for IMO and the oceans.
