On the occasion of the Day of the Seafarer, observed every June 25, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Domínguez, delivered a message recognizing the millions of seafarers who keep global trade moving and ensure the world’s supply of essential goods.

In his official message, Domínguez emphasized that behind every essential product, such as food, fuel, medicines, and everyday goods, is the dedication of people who work at sea, often under challenging conditions and far from their families for extended periods.

Under this year’s theme, “Carrying World Trade, Carrying the Risks”, he highlighted the growing concern for the safety and security of seafarers. In this context, he stressed that seafarers must not become collateral victims of situations beyond their control, pointing to areas such as the Red Sea, the Black Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz, among others.

He also drew attention to the difficult conditions many maritime workers face, including isolation, fatigue, uncertainty about crew changes, and limited opportunities to communicate with their families. “Every ship carries more than cargo, it carries people,” he emphasized, underscoring the human dimension of maritime transport and the need to safeguard the safety and well-being of those who play a vital role in the functioning of the global economy.

Finally, the IMO Secretary-General paid tribute to seafarers, reiterating that their protection remains a priority for the international maritime community. He also called on authorities and the general public to recognize the invaluable contribution of these essential workers: “Today is an opportunity to appreciate those who, through their quiet dedication, keep the world moving.”

At COCATRAM, we join the International Maritime Organization’s call, reaffirming our commitment to promoting safe, decent, and equitable working conditions for seafarers throughout Central America and around the world.
