
The Central American Commision for Maritime Transportation (COCATRAM), through the Directorate of Maritime and Port Affairs (DAMP), successfully held the Seminar Workshop “Strengthening Port Environmental Management in Honduras” from November 17 to 19 in the Municipal Council Chamber of Puerto Cortés.
The activity was developed within the framework of the work of the Port Environmental Management Network (REGAP) and was supported by the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA), the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine of Honduras (DGMM), the National Port Company (ENP), and the Municipality of Puerto Cortés.
The technical agenda of the seminar was an international consultant, and the COCATRAM team led by José Dopeso, who addressed topics such as the Port Environmental Management System (SIGAP), the formation and operation of Port Environmental Management Units (UGAP), as well as an analysis of ISO 14001:2026 and its relationship to environmental management systems in the region’s ports.
During the second day, participants worked on the implementation of the Port Environmental Code of Conduct, known as the “Green Book,” a key tool promoted by COCATRAM to strengthen environmental practices.

The last day of the meeting provided an opportunity to update the national outlook on the subject. Institutional advances were presented by SERNA, the National Port Authority, and other entities, in addition to an analysis of the state of port environmental management in Honduras, the dissemination of the form for calculating the Port Environmental Management Index, and a technical space dedicated to ship waste reception facilities in Honduran ports.
The seminar brought together representatives from public institutions and companies in the maritime-port sector, such as: AVANZA, CAICESA, CALDIC, Chevron, Elquiras, Gas del Caribe, Génesis, Global Trade, Operadora Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC), Mieles y Alcoholes, Hondupalma, TEH Logra, among others.
