COCATRAM is commemorating World Maritime Day 2025 by supporting the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Domínguez’s, urgent call to action under the slogan “Our ocean, our obligation, our opportunity”.
In his official statement, the IMO Secretary-General emphasised the vital role that oceans play in the life of the planet, recalling that ‘oceans sustain life on Earth as we know it’, regulating the climate, providing food and connecting nations through maritime trade, which accounts for approximately 80% of world trade.
However, he also warned that our seas are under unprecedented pressure. ‘Plastic pollution, rising temperatures, acidification and overfishing are damaging marine ecosystems. The deterioration of the oceans is not a coincidence, but a consequence of human activity,’ said Arsenio Domínguez.
At COCATRAM, we support the Secretary-General’s call to action by actively working on sustainable development initiatives for the maritime and port sectors in Central America. We promote policies that strengthen the protection of the marine environment and generate regional cooperation in line with the objectives of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
We recognize that reversing the damage to our oceans requires collaboration, innovation, and immediate action, and it is a shared responsibility. As Secretary-General Arsenio Domínguez said, this is an opportunity to build resilient economies, preserve biodiversity, and ensure a sustainable future for future generations.
