The Central American Commission for Maritime Transport (COCATRAM) and the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine of Honduras organized the fourth meeting of the Central American Network of Maritime and Port Women (REMPORT) in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on May 13 and 14.
REMPORT is comprised of delegates from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Its primary goal is to promote gender equity within the maritime-port sector and highlight the contributions of women in this industry, in line with Sustainable Development Goal No. 5.
During the IV REMPORT’s opening session, the presidency of the network was officially handed over from El Salvador, represented by Lieutenant Marinliz Chicas de Alfaro, to Honduras, represented by Attorney Laura Rivera, Deputy Director of the Merchant Marine of Honduras.
In recognition of her leadership and valuable contributions during her term as president of REMPORT, Lieutenant Chicas de Alfaro received an appreciation award. Additionally, warm congratulations were extended to Attorney Laura Rivera, who is expected to have a successful term from 2025 to 2026.
Laura Rivera expressed her honor at being appointed president and reaffirmed her commitment to the network’s objectives. She encouraged the delegates to continue collaborating to empower women in the maritime industry in Central America. In her words, she emphasized, “We are like the sea: serene on the surface, but with the force of a thousand storms within us.”
Since its establishment on April 6, 2018, the REMPORT Network has continued to establish itself as a strategic space for promoting gender equality and strengthening the role of women in the region’s maritime and port development.
